How to Spot a WhatsApp Scam in 30 Seconds

WhatsApp is now the #1 channel for scams worldwide. Most attacks follow the same five-step pattern: cold contact, social proof, urgency, off-platform move, payment. Learn to spot it once and you'll spot it forever.

Red flag 1: Unknown number, friendly opener

Real recruiters and banks identify themselves and the company. A 'Hi dear' from a number you don't have saved is almost always the opening line of a scam.

Red flag 2: Job offer with no interview

Any 'job' that pays per like, per review, or per task — and asks you to top up a wallet to 'unlock' earnings — is a task scam. There is no employer.

Red flag 3: 'Move to Telegram' or 'private group'

Scammers push you off WhatsApp because Meta is getting faster at banning them. The moment they ask you to switch apps, stop.

Red flag 4: OTP / code request

Nobody legitimate ever needs the 6-digit code WhatsApp just SMS'd you. That code hijacks your account.

Red flag 5: Crypto, gift cards, or instant EFT

Untraceable payment rails are the scammer's escape route. Banks can reverse. Crypto and gift cards cannot.

The bottom line

If even one red flag fires, forward the chat to ScamGuard on WhatsApp and get an instant verdict before you reply.
