Duplicate Charges on Your Bank Statement: What to Do

Duplicate charges are more common than you think — same merchant, same amount, billed twice in the same period. Sometimes it's a billing error. Sometimes it's two near-identical merchant accounts. Either way, you can get it reversed.

How duplicate charges happen

Payment processor glitch, double-tap at checkout, two near-identical merchant names billing in parallel, or genuine fraud testing your card with small amounts.

Spotting them

Same merchant, same amount, transaction dates within 1–3 days. Subscription Shield flags these automatically.

Step 1: Contact the merchant first

Email the merchant with both transaction IDs and ask for a refund. Most legitimate businesses refund within 48 hours.

Step 2: Dispute with your bank

If the merchant doesn't refund within 7 days, file a chargeback as 'duplicate transaction'. Banks resolve these quickly — it's one of the easiest dispute categories to win.

Step 3: Watch for repeat patterns

If duplicates keep appearing from the same merchant, cancel the subscription entirely and use a virtual card if you re-subscribe.

The bottom line

Run Subscription Shield's duplicate-charges checker on your statement and catch every double-bill before it costs you another month.
